And it’s not just Lords and MPs – as the FT’s John Gapper says:

“We have entered a world in which diplomats and civil servants plan on getting to the top in their 50s and then, instead of taking a gong and a gold-plated pension into retirement, striking out for a second life in the private sector. They become consultants, “advisers” and lobbyists, and sit on boards as non-executive directors”.
